WHAT IS YOUR CONFLICT MANAGEMENT STYLE?
Conflict is inevitable. Each of us will face situations with others that vex and frustrate us. However, we uniquely deal with conflict in different ways. There are five basic conflict management styles -- avoiding, accommodating, compromising, collaborating, and competing.
Sam, Anna and Myrlie did a great job as workshop trainers. As a participant, I felt that it was time well spent. The objective for the workshop was for participants to learn their predominant conflict management style, to be aware of other styles and to learn how to apply these management styles in various situations as needed.
The Conflict Management Workshop was held at 6 pm on Wednesday, Nov 6 in the ILC. The presenters were well prepared and very organized. They knew their audience and time of day, hence providing pizza and treats to create comfort zones (making sure hunger didn't hinder participant learning). The room was organized well for an intimate discussion.
Each of the presenters took a turn teaching the various principles of conflict management and then followed that up with a very effective demonstration video. The video helped cement concepts taught. We took a survey and then talked about how to interpret the results. The discussion helped us synthesize learning. We ended by talking about some real world issues that we were facing and how to best resolve those conflicts using the different styles that were presented.
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED: This workshop was great and made me realize how important conflict management skills are and how often we stumble around in life trying to figure out how to deal with those in our circle of influence. Each of us will deal with difficult personalities and vexing issues; however, understanding these tools can make all the difference in navigating our many interpersonal interactions. These skills also make all the difference in our classrooms and trainings as we inevitably will have to deal with unforeseen behaviors and personality types.
